100-Mile Diet: Meal plan goes the distance

What kind of supermarket is this? It's not a store -- it's a philosophy of eating that began in Canada, trickled down to California and is slowly making its way across the nation.

It's called the 100-Mile Diet, a meal plan that encourages you to eat only foods grown, raised or crafted within a 100-mile radius of your home. It's a lifestyle that promotes sustainable agriculture where you live and cuts down on the amount of energy and resources it takes to get food to the table.

From downtown Orlando, the 100-mile market basket takes a wide sweep north through Green Cove Springs, then takes in Gainesville, Inverness and Tampa before dipping down to the tip of Lake Okeechobee and back up to St. Augustine. The circle takes in a generous portion of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean.

Sleep Helps Kids Control Weight

The importance of obtaining adequate sleep is a known influence on children's social and emotional well-being and school performance. New research suggests obtaining appropriate sleep can make a significant difference for controlling weight among children.

The study — conducted in two waves of data collection approximately five years apart — is the first nationally representative, longitudinal investigation of the relationship between sleep, Body Mass Index (BMI) and overweight status in children aged 3 to 18.

"Our study suggests that earlier bedtimes, later wake times and later school start times could be an important and relatively low-cost strategy to help reduce childhood weight problems," says Emily Snell. Snell is co-author of "Sleep and the Body Mass Index and Overweight Status of Children and Adolescents" in the Jan./Feb.
