| Health columnist offers 100 ways to look and feel better
Chris Rosenbloom, Georgia State nutrition professor and former American Dietetic Association spokeswoman, is marking the milestone of her 100th published health column in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution with a collection of 100 simple and easy health tips that can lead to better health. The following are educational online resources Rosenbloom suggests for learning to eat healthy. With a commitment to helping people enjoy healthy lives, the American Dietetic Association's key areas of interest include: obesity and overweight, with a focus on children; healthy aging; safe, sustainable and nutritious food supply; nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics; and integrative medicine, including supplements and alternative medicine. While some of the areas of the website are restricted to members only, they make a wealth of diet and nutrition information accessible to all visitors.
Going on a power diet
Torrent Power, which has grown significantly in the past few years, is poised to gain from the growing power sector. The company was formed following the merger of Torrent Power AEC, Torrent Power SEC and Torrent Power Generation. The company's focus on the sector and the competence it has built up will see shareholders gain over the next 12-18 months. Its under-construction power plant should start operation during this period, adding to its bottomline. The restructuring will help the business further once this project becomes operational. The share of institutional interest is relatively low. This gives retail investors greater chance to participate in the company's growth. The stock is currently trading at P/E of about 30 times. This is higher than the P/E of Tata Power and Reliance Energy at 16-18 times.
Amazing Omega-3 weight loss diet with exercise
University of South Australia researchers have good news for people trying to lose weight, or maintain a healthy weight, in improving their health and reducing their risks for diseases like cancer. With no other lifestyle changes, taking omega-3 fish oil supplements and engaging in moderate exercise helped people struggling with weight issues -- who are overweight or obese -- effectively burn off extra pounds. The researchers used tuna oil and sunflower oil in the study, and compared the effects of the two oils with exercise to weight loss results. The participants engaged in exercise that is considered moderate exercise -- walking or running for 45 minutes -- three times a week for three months and were given either tuna fish oil or sunflower oil. The participants who were given tuna fish oil lost weight faster.
Women's Health-Timing is Everything
In February, during American Heart Month, we are encouraged to eat a heart healthy diet, manage medical conditions such as high cholesterol and diabetes, and exercise to reduce the risk of developing cardio-vascular disease (CVD). However, one in three American adults already has CVD and is at risk for heart attack and stroke. CVD kills an American every 35 seconds and is the leading cause of death in women over age 25. Suffering a cardiac event is not a sure death sentence, but time is of the essence. The sooner victims receive medical attention, the better their chances for a life-saving intervention. Some medications and therapies can even help stop a heart attack or stroke in progress. To be most effective, these therapies should be administered within one hour of the onset of symptoms.
