Dietetic group to educate students

The UNLV division of the Student Dietetic Association (SDA) is taking a stand against obesity by partnering with America on the Move (AOM).

The SDA will be promoting participation in AOM and will have a booth in the student union Jan. 22 through 25 between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. Nutrition students at the booth will be selling pedometers to students for $1 and to staff for $3.

AOM is a non-profit organization that encourages people to make small changes in their daily lives in order to maintain their weight. Research conducted by AOM has shown that making new habits, such as increasing the number of steps you take daily, can have a great impact on health and quality of life over time.

The organization also promotes the use of pedometers, which allow individuals to measure how many steps they take every day.

Anna's diet pills 'no good'

Los Angeles - Anna Nicole Smith and the diet products company TrimSpa Inc have been sued in a class-action lawsuit alleging their marketing of a weight loss pill is false or misleading.

Janet Luna and three people identified as her guardians were named in a lawsuit filed in Superior Court in Los Angeles, alleging deceptive business practices and a violation of California's unfair competition law.

They are asking for unspecified damages, restitution and an injunction preventing Smith and New Jersey-based TrimSpa, maker of TrimSpa X32, from making claims that users of the pills can lose substantial amounts of weight.

Smith has endorsed TrimSpa and is a spokesperson.

Last month, the Federal Trade Commission announced TrimSpa would pay $1.5m to settle allegations that the company's weight-loss claims were unsubstantiated.
